Slate Black Composite Decking Composition
These innovative composite decking boards are made from 55% recycled wood, 40% HDPE, and ~5% additives, so they're not only good for the environment but also incredibly durable.
The composition of the boards can vary slightly for each colour, depending on the additives used to create the colour. So if you're looking for a unique, eye-catching deck that will last for years to come, SmartDeck® decking is the perfect choice!
Application
All of our composite deck boards come in 4m or 2m lengths, but can easily be cut down to custom sizes with standard carpentry tools. And, unlike classic wood decking, you don't have to worry about composite boards warping or cracking over time.
They're also incredibly easy to install - even if you're not a professional tradesman. Simply secure the boards using hidden fixings for a clean and professional installation that will last the test of time.
Do not attached composite decking boards directly to the subframe with screws, always use the clips or fitting systems provided to secure the deck to the joists.
The clips allow the deck to expand or contract by about 5mm. 5mm Gap, allow a 5mm gap at the end of each board to expand and contract during hotter weather conditions.
Gradient allow for a 1 in 100 (1%) gradient to allow water to drain off the deck.
Please Note:
As with all brands of composite decking, SmartDeck's range will lighten and lose up to 30% of its colour in the first 6 months before stabilising to its final colour.
Composite products are made in different batches. Batches can differ in size, shade, texture and colour. We highly recommend ordering all of your decking together to avoid subtle differences in appearance.
Composite Decking Boards have a width tolerance of up to 2%.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Slate Black Composite Decking made of?
It’s manufactured using approximately 55% recycled wood, 40% HDPE (high‑density plastic) and about 5% additives for colour, stability & UV protection.
Does this decking come with a warranty?
Yes — SmartDeck provides a 5‑year warranty covering manufacturing defects & structural integrity.
Is it slip resistant and safe for wet conditions?
Yes — the surface has anti‑slip features and the product is designed to perform safely even when wet.
Will the colour fade or change over time?
The decking will lighten and may lose up to ~30% of its colour in the first 6 months, after which the colour stabilises. Different production batches may also cause slight shade / texture variations.
What are the dimensions / sizes available?
Boards are about 150 mm wide and 25 mm thick. Lengths include variants like 2.0m, 2.4m, 3.4m, 3.6m, 4.0m (depending on stock).
How easy is it to cut and install?
It can be cut down with standard carpentry tools. To install correctly, use hidden clip fixings rather than screwing through the boards, and leave ~5 mm gaps at the ends of boards to allow for expansion/contraction.
How does composite decking compare to natural wood?
Composite decking resists warping, rotting, splitting and is low‑maintenance compared to wood. There’s no need for painting, sealing, or frequent treatment.
What maintenance is required?
Very little. Regular sweeping & washing with soapy water is usually enough. No sealing or staining is required. Avoid harsh chemicals or pressure washing too close.
Does it expand/contract with temperature changes?
Yes — thermal expansion/contraction is accounted for in installation: allow a 5 mm gap at ends of boards and ensure correct spacing via hidden fixings. Gradient of ~1% (1 in 100) for drainage is recommended.
Is this an eco‑friendly choice?
Yes. The product uses recycled materials (wood & plastic) in high proportion. Also more durable (longer lifespan) than untreated wood which means fewer replacements, less waste.
